"I realized the moment I fell into the fissure that the book would not be destroyed as I had planned. It continued falling into that starry expanse, of which I had only a fleeting glimpse."
The "Starry Expanse" is a mysterious location seemingly existing between multiple Ages, with an appearance similar to that of a starfield, containing multiple dark cloud-like formations which migrate through the starfield cyclically. The only known entry points to the Starry Expanse are the Star Fissures on Riven and Relto, and the entrances in some Bahro Caves.
When Anna and Katran made changes to Riven's Descriptive Book, causing the appearance of the Moiety Daggers and the opening of multiple magma-filled fissures which split the island into five, the Star Fissure, a breach in the fabric of the Age itself, also opened, a completely unintended side-effect of the aforementioned changes.
The Star Fissure was a direct access point to the Starry Expanse, and was described by Gehn in his journal as "[permitting] matter to be hospitably exchanged between two discreet but overlapping spaces - much like a Link, but the apparent physical contradictions surrounding this juncture defy logical reason: the great column of wind that was formed when the Fissure first appeared suggests a vacuum as one might expect in space, yet my early experimentations revealed the presence of a breathable atmosphere."
All objects that fell into the Star Fissure on Riven during its collapse ended up reappearing on Earth, near the Cleft. It is not clear why this is the exit point, or why the Star Fissure appeared on Riven in the first place.
Two other known entry points to the Expanse exist as part of Yeesha's Journey; the Bahro Caves that contain the Bahro Pillars before they are moved to D'ni all appear to be suspended over an entrance to the Starry Expanse, and jumping into this entry point results in an explorer being linked to Relto.
The other entry point is a slightly scaled-down duplicate of Riven's Star Fissure, which appears in an explorer's Relto once all four pillars have been returned to D'ni. This Star Fissure, like Riven's, 'links' all entering objects to the area around the Cleft, on Earth.
